The Dinner scene in Portrait of Artist showed me how high people hold religion. It turned a Christmas dinner into big dramatic argument. One that originally started with only a few people, Dante and Dedalus, but quickly enveloped most of the family. This might be good for plays but as this one shows, it practically tears the family apart. On the other hand, we’re also shown just how passionate these people are and few things can fan the flames of passion outside of religion.
